3-Day Itinerary:
Zanzibar to Mikumi & Selous National Parks

Day 1

Zanzibar to Dar es Salaam –
Transfer to Mikumi National Park

Morning:

Ferry Ride from Zanzibar to Dar es Salaam: Start the journey with a scenic ferry ride (2–3 hours) across the Indian Ocean to Dar es Salaam. Upon arrival, travelers will be met by their Ngasini Travel guide for a quick briefing and transfer to Mikumi National Park.

Drive to Mikumi National Park:

The road trip (4–5 hours) takes guests through the Uluguru Mountains and rural Tanzanian landscapes, offer glimpses of daily life along the way.

Lunch Stop

  • Enjoy a hearty local or packed lunch during the journey.

Afternoon

  • Evening Game Drive in Mikumi National Park: Arrive at Mikumi in time for an evening game drive. This park is often compared to the Serengeti for its open savannahs and offers opportunities to spot lions, elephants, giraffes, and zebras against the stunning backdrop of the Mkata Plains.

Dinner and Overnight Stay:

  • Check into a lodge or tented camp near the park and enjoy a warm meal under the African sky.

Mikumi National Park to
Selous Game Reserve

Morning

  • Sunrise Game Drive in Mikumi: Begin the day with a sunrise game drive, the best time to see predators on the hunt and herbivores grazing in the golden morning light.
  • Breakfast at the Lodge: After the drive, return to the lodge for breakfast.

  • Transfer to Selous Game Reserve:

    Depart for Selous (now Nyerere National Park), a drive of approximately 5–6 hours through rural villages and diverse landscapes.

  • Arrival in Selous and Boat Safari:

    Check into the lodge upon arrival, then head out for a boat safari on the Rufiji River. Spot crocodiles, hippos, and an array of water birds, and enjoy the peaceful scenery of this vast reserve.

Evening

  • Dinner and Campfire at the Lodge:

    After the boat safari, relax with a delicious dinner and share stories by the campfire before retiring for the night.

Day 3

Saddle Hut to Socialist Peak (Summit)
– Return to Miriakamba Hut

  • Midnight – Summit Ascent:
  • Wake at midnight for a light meal before starting the summit trek. The trail begins with a steep ascent over rocky terrain and continues along a dramatic ridge to Socialist Peak (4,566 m/14,980 ft).

  • Experience the thrill of standing at the summit as the sun rises, offering awe-inspiring views of Mount Kilimanjaro, the crater rim, and the ash cone inside the Meru crater.

Morning

  • Descend carefully back to Saddle Hut for breakfast and a brief rest.

Afternoon

  • Continue descending to Miriakamba Hut, enjoying the changing landscapes and a well-deserved rest after the challenging summit day.

Evening

  • Celebrate your accomplishment over dinner and unwind at the camp.

Miriakamba Hut to Momella Gate
– Return to Arusha

Distance: ~10 km (6.2 miles)

Elevation Loss: 1,387 m (4,551 ft)

Hiking Time: 2–4 hours

Morning

  • After breakfast, descend to Momella Gate, retracing your steps through the lush forest. Keep an eye out for wildlife on your way down.

Afternoon

  •  Receive certificates of achievement at the gate and bid farewell to your guide and porters.

  • Drive back to Arusha, arriving in time for a celebratory meal or some well-earned rest at your hotel.

Evening

  • Celebrate your accomplishment over dinner and unwind at the camp.
