Overview of the Machame Route

The Machame Route, often nicknamed the “Whiskey Route,” is one of Kilimanjaro’s most scenic and popular trekking trails. Known for its stunning views and diverse landscapes, it’s a favorite among adventurous hikers looking for a well-paced climb with excellent acclimatisation.

Beginning on the southern side of the mountain, this route passes through rainforest, heath, moorland, alpine desert, and glacier zones. Though more physically demanding than the Marangu Route, Machame offers higher summit success rates thanks to its ideal climb-high, sleep-low profile.
