Why Visit Serengeti
The Serengeti is Tanzania’s most famous safari destination and one of the greatest wildlife reserves on Earth. Its vast plains, endless skies, and dramatic wildlife encounters make it the very definition of a classic African safari. Renowned for the Great Migration – where over two million wildebeest, zebra, and gazelle move across the plains in search of fresh grazing – the Serengeti offers year-round game viewing and breathtaking scenery.
Wildlife Highlights
The Serengeti is home to one of the highest concentrations of large mammals in the world. Alongside the Great Migration, visitors can encounter the Big Five – lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhino – as well as cheetahs, giraffes, hyenas, and countless antelope species. The park is particularly famous for its large lion prides, as well as dramatic predator-prey interactions. Birdwatchers will also be delighted, with over 500 species ranging from ostriches to colourful bee-eaters.
Best Time to Visit
The Serengeti is a year-round safari destination, but the timing of your visit may be influenced by the Great Migration. From December to March, the herds gather in the southern plains for calving season, with predators in close pursuit. Between June and July, dramatic river crossings take place at the Grumeti and Mara Rivers, while from August to October, the migration moves through the northern Serengeti and into Kenya’s Maasai Mara. The green season (November and April–May) offers fewer crowds, lush scenery, and excellent resident wildlife viewing.
Accommodation
The Serengeti offers an unparalleled range of safari lodges and camps, from ultra-luxury tented retreats to authentic bush camps. Options include mobile camps that move with the migration, ensuring guests are always close to the action, as well as permanent lodges with panoramic views over the plains. Walking safaris in designated areas offer a chance to explore the bush on foot, while photographic safaris provide unique opportunities to capture the Serengeti’s wildlife and landscapes.
