When to Visit Tanzania
Your month-by-month guide to safaris, beaches, and the Great Migration
Tanzania is a year-round destination, but the best time to visit depends on your interests — whether it’s a classic safari, climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, or relaxing on Zanzibar’s beaches.
June to October – Cool, dry weather and excellent game viewing:
• Wildlife gathers around water sources.
• Peak time for the Great Migration in the Serengeti (river crossings in July–September).
• Perfect for visiting the Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire, Ruaha, and Nyerere (Selous).
January to February – Short dry season in northern Tanzania:
• Best time for calving in the southern Serengeti (predator action is high).
• Great for photography with clear skies.
November to mid-December – Short rains:
• Often just brief afternoon showers.
• Fewer crowds, lush landscapes, and lower rates.
March to May – Long rains:
• Heavy rainfall in some regions.
• Many lodges close in remote parks, but wildlife viewing is still possible in areas like the Ngorongoro Crater.
• Excellent time for birdwatching.
- Best weather: June to October (cool and dry) & January to February (warm and sunny).
- Avoid: March to May (heavy rains) and November (short rains).
- Honeymooners & couples: January–February and June–July for calm seas and beautiful sunsets.
- Best months: January–February & July–October.
